IU has teamed up with BTS’s Suga for her new track eight, and for fans of Korean music, it’s a very good day.
The video for the pop rock track dropped at 6pm Korean time on 6 May, and the catchy song is all about being 28. That ties in pretty well for both IU and Suga – IU is about to turn 28 (in Korean age) while Suga turned 28 in March – and both stars worked on the music and lyrics for the single.
The video is a cute mash-up of live action and animation, seeing IU placed in a simulation and having her animated self flying and riding a dragon. While we don’t get to see Suga, his distinctive rap skills are heard in the second verse.
Speaking about eight on a VLive with bandmate RM, Yoongi explained: ‘The production process was very smooth so there wasn’t a lot of back-and-forth. I wrote the beat and the melody came quickly after that. After I finished working on it, I listened to it a lot.
‘After I finish working on a song, after it’s released, I don’t usually listen to it. Because I can only hear the things that I wish I could do better.
The moment it leaves my hands, I think the song belongs to the listeners.’ The credits of the track reveal that Suga and IU composed and arranged the lyrics and music together, while Yoongi worked on the piano and synthesiser as well. Fans have praised IU’s sweet vocals on the track, as well as freaking out over the inventive visuals in the MV.
And just minutes after the video dropped, #IUxSuga began trending on Twitter – because we all know K-pop fans waste no time in celebrating their favourites.
IU, aka Lee Ji-eun, is one of the best selling solo artists in Korean music, as well as being an accomplished actress, starring in Netflix’s Persona and Hotel del Luna.
